Bought it for my gf so she could work n walk. So far a bust on the dual function as she had yet to try it. My step mother however has one and uses it with good success.

I have a recumbent exercise bike with a heart monitor so I don't have to pay attention while I work out - the bike adjusts the load to maintain my target heart rate. I used to read books, but holding the book is a pain. Listening to the iPod was OK but I couldn't watch videos. Now I can read news, surf the web, or watch videos on my laptop and I'm not constantly checking the clock to see how much longer I have to go! I would normally spend a half hour on the web in the morning anyway, so now I get my exercise at the same time.
Mounting took a couple of tries to get the straps threaded the right way and some more fiddling to get the height right. Since they are fabric they stretch when you put the laptop on and the shelf slides down a bit. If the bottom catches it will angle away from the panel it is resting on. This is definitely not something you want to move between machines. It is impressive the wide variety of machines that it will fit.
I'm not sure how useful the laptop safety strap is - I've never seen the laptop slide and I just attach it so it doesn't dangle in the pedals. Since the strap is attached to the shelf, if you bump the shelf really hard and it pops out of the back the whole thing is going to hit the floor anyway. If I had the right tools I would have built something myself, but this is here now and it works.

I was so impressed by the design and quality of the SurfShelf, but it covered up the fan on my bike. It took me awhile to deal with this tough decision (comfort vs. entertainment???), but I finally returned the item. Correspondence with the president of the company was extremely courteous and customer-oriented. He fully honored their promise of "100% satisfaction guaranteed" and refunded my entire purchase price including shipping. [...]

NOT a desk, but great to hold your laptop February 7, 2010

Don't buy this if you are thinking "desk". It's not a desk, despite the name. In fact, the instructions tell you not to put any additional weight on the product (other than your laptop). So, if you are buying this to hold your laptop to watch a movie while you work out or gently tap the keyboard as you work, no problem--it does a great job of that for an inexpensive price. They have done a very good job of designing the product to securely hold your laptop, but you can't "lean" at all on the product or put any additional weight on the product. I give the product four stars for being a very inexpensive way to securely hold a laptop on your treadmill--it's worth the money just for that purpose.
Since I was actually trying to get work done, and not watch a movie, I didn't find the product very useful for that purpose. I ended up buying a Trek Desk (which I love) after this product didn't meet my needs.
fits SOLE elliptical tilted console February 5, 2010

I have a SOLE brand elliptical that has a fan and speakers in the console. My elliptical has a tilted console with a 'step' in it, and I was very concerned about spending the money then having to deal with sending it back.
I am keeping this great invention. The fan is totally blocked, so I would not want to operate the fan while the SurfShelf is installed. The side speakers are only blocked slightly, so I can use them without any problem. My elliptical also has those 'moving arms' and there is no problem with the shelf.
Just to make sure the angle of the SurfShelf was still supportive for my laptop, we left several thick, heavy books on top of the shelf overnight. These books easily weighed twice my laptop. There were no problems with the SurfShelf the next morning, and I started using my laptop on it right away. My laptop is in the size of the 13"-14" range.
